About Saint Aignan dOrleans

Saint-Aignan d'Orleans is a university church in the Bourgogne quarter of Orleans on the north bank of the Loire. The congregation is devoted to Anianus, a 5th century diocesan of Orleans, who, as per legend, convinced Attila the Hun not to sack the city. As indicated by Gregory of Tours, there was a basilica with a hallowed place to Anianus where Bishop Namatius was covered after his demise in 587. A cloister devoted to Anianus existed in the main portion of the 7th century, on the grounds that in 651 its abbot, Leodebodus, left to establish another religious community at Fleury ashore given by King Clovis II. According to the Chronicle of Fredegar, written amidst the century, the sanctum of Anianus was practically identical in significance to that of Saint Martin of Tours. Queen Balthild bolstered change there by presenting the standard of Benedict and that of the Irish minister Columbanus.

The religious community of Saint-Aignan was rededicated in 1029. At the time its primary special raised area was mutually devoted to Saints Peter and Anianus, while the special stepped area in the choir was committed to Anianus alone, whose relics lay in the tomb beneath it. There were 12 minor special stepped areas coating the nave, devoted to saints of both neighborhood and general significance, yet the six nearby saints whose relics the congregation had did not have any special raised areas, rituals or hagiographies by any means. Not long after this date, the bones of Saint Euspicius were exchanged to Saint-Mesmin de Micy. In the 1070s, an unknown priest of Saint-Aignan formed the Miracula sancti Aniani, an accumulation of accounts of marvels performed by Anianus.
