The Ardeche River streams into the Rhone, just toward the north of the scaffold. The inhabitants are called Spiripontains. The extension was seen by the Irish traveler Symon Semeonis in 1323 on his way to the Holy Land: "Pont-Saint-Esprit where there is a well known stone scaffold over the Rhone, a large portion of a mile long, the tallness of which and the broadness of its curves are significantly appreciated by each one of the individuals who traverse it."
Pont-Saint-Esprit is acclaimed as the town of birthplace of Michel Bouvier, a cabinetmaker, who was the precursor of John Vernou Bouvier III, father of Jacqueline Kennedy.
