Musee des Beaux-Arts de Strasbourg
About Musee des Beaux-Arts de Strasbourg
Strasbourg’s Museum of Fine Arts is housed on several floors of the baroque Palais Rohan, and has been since 1898. The museum is home to the city’s old masters paintings collection, with non-Upper Rhenish works dating from the 14th century and up to 1871 and Upper Rhenish artwork from 1681 to 1871. Visitors to Strasbourg who are interested in seeing Upper-Rhenish paintings from before 1681 can see them on display in the Musee de l’Oeuvre Notre Dame, not far from the Museum of Fine Arts.
Of the 900 works in the museum’s collection, 250 are permanently on display. Famous artists whose works are shown in the Museum of Fine Arts include Raphael “Portrait of a young lady”, El Greco “Mater Dolorosa”, Anthony van Dyk “Portrait of Luigia Cattaneo-Gentile” and Nicolas de Largilliere “The Beautiful Strasbourg Woman”. Italian, Flemish, Dutch, French and Spanish painters are represented in the museum, which proposes a journey through the centuries and schools. You will find Italian and Flemish Primitives, Renaissance and Mannerism, Baroque, Naturalism and Classicism in the 17th and 18th centuries, and several works from the 20thcentury such as Delacroix, Chasseriau, Corot and Courbet.
In addition, the Strasbourg Museum of Fine Arts also owns a small but valuable collection of sculptures, mainly busts from France and Italy. Sculptures exhibited include Alessandro Algardi, Jean-Antoine Houdon, Francoise Joseph Bosio and Adolf von Hildebrand.
