In the 8th century, Charlemagne approved the development of a braced hill around the site of the present manor. Quite a bit of Gien was demolished amid the Second World War. The town was besieged by the Luftwaffe, who planned to pulverize the town's extension to keep the French Army from withdrawing. The barrage made a gigantic flame which totally pulverized more than 400 structures, including the town's two fundamental chapels. The town was modified after the war.
