The name Courbevoie originates from Latin Curva Via and signifies "bended expressway", purportedly in reference to a Roman street from Paris to Normandy which made a sharp swing to climb the slope over which Courbevoie was assembled. A wooden scaffold was manufactured intersection the Seine at Courbevoie by request of king Henry IV when in 1606 his illustrious mentor fell into the stream while being transported by ship. Reconstructed in stone amid the 18th century, this was supplanted by a metal scaffold in 1946. The Convent of the Penitents established in 1658 by Jean-Baptiste Forne was situated in Courbevoie until the revolution of 1789. Additionally situated in the town was the sleeping quarters of the swiss guard of the government.
