The Chateau-Thierry American Monument is a World War I remembrance, devoted in 1937, situated close Chateau-Thierry, Aisne, France. Compositionally it is an eminent case of Stripped Classicism. It is situated around 54 miles east of Paris, 4.5 miles southeast of the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial, and 17 miles southwest of the Oise-Aisne American Cemetery and Memorial. It celebrates the accomplishments of United States powers that battled in the district amid World War I.
In 1918, the second and third United States Infantry Divisions participated in substantial battling around the territory amid the Second Battle of the Marne, which occurred amid the more extensive German Spring Offensive. The fourth Marine Brigade, which became well known in the Battle of Belleau Wood, battled as a major aspect of the second Infantry Division. The groups of various US servicemen who were slaughtered amid the battling are entombed in burial grounds nereby.
Two stone arches mark the passage to the remembrance from Highway N-3 which keeps running from Paris to Chateau-Thierry. The landmark comprises of a twofold corridor transcending a long terrace, as structured by Paul Philippe Cret. On its west veneer are designed figures speaking to the United States and France. The artist was the French-American craftsman Alfred Bottiau. The English engraving peruses, "This landmark has been raised by the United States of America to recognize the administrations of her troops and those of France who battled in this district amid the World War.
