About Charente River
The Charente River is a 381-kilometer long waterway in southwestern France. Its source is in the Haute-Vienne departement at Cheronnac, a little town close Rochechouart. It moves through the divisions of Haute-Vienne, Charente, Vienne and Charente-Maritime. The stream streams into the Atlantic Ocean close Rochefort. The Charente was portrayed by the French lord Francois I as 'la in addition to beauty riviere du royaume', and was safe in its common state until plants were raised at numerous areas in the 14th century.
A few locks were constructed however through route stayed unthinkable for quite a long time. Upgrades to the route were anticipated under Louis XVI in 1772, yet work was hindered by the Revolution. The task was resuscitated under the Restoration and canalisation finished in 1835. The conduit was surrendered in 1957. The departements took over activity in 1963, and recreational vessels have now claimed the conduit all through the 164 km to the town of Angouleme.
