The Carree d'art at Nimes in southern France homes a museum of modern-day artwork and the town's municipal library. Constructed of glass, concrete and metallic, it faces the Maison Carree, a superbly preserved Roman temple that dates from the 1st century BC. In 1984, twelve architects, inclusive of Frank Gehry, Jean Nouvel and Cesar Pelli, have been invited to publish proposals for the museum.
