About Bossons Glacier

The Bossons Glacier is one of the larger glaciers of the Mont Blanc massif of the Alps, found in the Chamonix valley of Haute-Savoie departement, south-eastern France. It is bolstered from icefields lying on the northern side of Mont Blanc, and slips down near the Aiguille du Midi and closures on the southern side of the Arve valley, near the town of Chamonix. It has the biggest altitudinal drop of all the elevated ice sheets in Europe, and in the past expanded considerably additionally down the valley than it does today. It is presently around 7.5 km long, with a surface region of roughly 10 km².

In the seventeenth century the Bossons ice sheet expanded directly down into Chamonix, achieving the settlement of Le Fouly, immersing farmland, stables and houses. Nearby diocesans were called upon to exorcize the evil presences inside the ice sheet. In 1777 the explorer and journalist, William Coxe, saw in his letters that "we mounted by the side of the icy mass of Bosson, to les Murailles de Glace, supposed from their likeness to dividers: they frame the vast scopes of ice of huge thickness and robustness, rising unexpectedly and parallel to each other.
