Arles
About Arles
Arles is a city and cooperative in the south of France, in the Bouches-du-Rhone office, of which it is a subprefecture, in the previous region of Provence. A huge piece of the Camargue is situated on the domain of the cooperative, making it the biggest collective in Metropolitan France regarding an area. The city has a long history, and was of extensive significance in the Roman area of Gallia Narbonensis. The Roman and Romanesque Monuments of Arles were recorded as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1981.
The Dutch post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh lived in Arles from 1888 to 1889 and created more than 300 works of art and illustrations amid his time there. A universal photography celebration has been held in the city since 1970. Arles is a social hotspot. A notable photography celebration, Rencontres d'Arles, happens in Arles consistently, and the French national school of photography is situated there.
