About Alyscamps
The Alyscamps is a huge Roman necropolis, which is a short separation outside the dividers of the old town of Arles, France. It was a standout amongst the most popular necropolises of the antiquated world. The name originates from the Provencal Occitan word Aliscamps, which originates from the Latin Elisii Campi. They were celebrated in the Middle Ages and are alluded to by Ariosto in Orlando Furioso and by Dante in the Inferno. Roman urban communities customarily denied entombments inside as far as possible.
It was hence basic for the streets quickly outside a city to be fixed with tombs and sepulchers; the Appian Way outside Rome gives a genuine model. The Alyscamps was Arles' principle cemetery for almost 1,500 years. It was the last fragment of the Aurelian Way paving the way to the city entryways and was utilized as a graveyard for wealthy natives, whose dedications went from straightforward stone coffins to expound landmarks.
