About Agde
Agde is a commune within the Herault branch in southern France. It is the Mediterranean port of the Canal du Midi. Agde 525 B.C. is one of the oldest cities in France, proper in the back of Beziers 575 B.C. and Marseilles 600 B.C.. Become a 5th-century B.C. Greek colony settled via Phocaeans from Massilia. The image of the town, the bronze Ephebe of Agde, of the 4th century BCE, recovered from the fluvial sands of the Hérault, was joined in December 2001 by Early Imperial Roman bronzes, of a child and of Eros, which had likely been on their way to a villa in Gallia Narbonensis once they were misplaced in a shipwreck.
Agde is understood for the distinctive black basalt used in local buildings inclusive of the cathedral of Saint Stephen, built within the 12th century to update a 9th-century Carolingian edifice constructed on the foundations of a 5th-century Roman church. Bishop Guillaume fortified the cathedral's precincts and supplied it with a 35-metre donjon maintain. The Romanesque cloister of the cathedral become demolished in 1857.
