About Abbeville
Abbeville is a commune in the Somme branch and in Hauts de France place in northern France. It is the chef lieu of one of the arrondissements of Somme. Located on the River Somme, it turned into the capital of Ponthieu. Its population is referred to as the Abbevillois. The subsoil contains many vestiges of the Pleistocene. This discovery changed into a founding detail of prehistory as a science. The name Abbeville has been followed to call a class of paleolithic stone gear. These stone tools also are known as handaxes.
Various handaxes have been discovered near Abbeville with the aid of Jacques Boucher de Perthes starting in 1838 and he become the primary to explain the stones in detail, declaring inside the first guide of its type, in 1846, that the stones were chipped deliberately by means of early guy, on the way to shape a tool. These stone gear which are some of the earliest discovered in Europe, had been chipped on each aspects so as to form a pointy side were referred to as Abbevillian handaxes or bifaces, but lately the term 'abevillian' is becoming obsolete as the earlier shape of stone device no longer located in Europe is known as the Oldowan chopper.
