About Olavinlinna

Olavinlinna is a fifteenth-century three-tower fort placed in Savonlinna, Finland. It is the northernmost medieval stone citadel still standing. The fort is constructed on an island in the Kyronsalmi strait that connects the lakes Haukivesi and Pihlajavesi. The fortress become based with the aid of Erik Axelsson Tott in 1475 below the name Sankt Olofsborg with a view to profit from the political turmoil following Ivan III's conquest of the Novgorod Republic. It become sited in Savonia with a view to lay to the Russian aspect of the border established by using the Treaty of Noteborg.

One of Tott's letters from 1477 consists of a passing point out of foreign developers invited to Olofsborg, likely from Reval, in which the town fortifications were being extended. It became the primary Swedish fort supplied with a hard and fast of thickset round towers that could withstand cannon fireplace. It isn't with the aid of accident that a community of lakes and waterways paperwork the placing for the citadel, for those could critically impede a prospective Russian offensive.
