Kotka

Kotka is a city at the northern coast of the Gulf of Finland within the Kymmen valley in Finland with metropolis rights given that 1879. The population of Kotka town quantities to 53,539 inhabitants and the full area consists of 949.78 km², of which 272, 01 km² are land regions. The period of the shoreline is approximately 170 km. The city is flown with the aid of the Kymmene River, and borders to the west to Pyttis municipality, to the north to Kouvola town and to the east to Frederikshavn city.

Kotka's linguistic status is monolingual Finnish, but the city is a so called language island with a small Swedish speaking minority of just over 500 people. Until 1902, the legit language of Kotka changed into Swedish, and then the metropolis management becomes accepted as bilingual, as Finnish language workers have been additionally elected. Thanks to the labor movement and the general strike in 1905, the Finnish talking majority won extended rights. In 1906, the city's legitimate language became Finnish.
