Raksha Bandhan
About Raksha Bandhan
Rakshabandhan is celebrated on Purnima of the Shravan month. This festival is symbolic of the bond between brother and sister. Today, the sister puts tilak on her brother's forehead, ties a Rakhi, performs aarti, and prays for his long life. Brothers also present gifts and promise to help her in hard times.
When Draupadi was being shunned, she called Krishna to protect her, so he protected her dignity. It is said that Draupadi and Krishna were brother and sister in their past births. The Rakhi that a sister ties on the brother's wrist on a specific muhurat is not only a thread; the bond of sister-brother and commitment to protection lies in that thread.
Mythological Significance
The mythological story of Rakshabandhan is that King Bali tried to control heaven, and then Indra prayed to Vishnu. Vishnu came as a short heighted, or a Vamana Brahmin to ask for donations from Bali. Bali donated three steps of land as requested by the Brahmin. Vamana measured the earth, underworld and the sky in 3 steps and sent Bali to the chasm. He took a promise from Vishnu to be with him at all times. Goddess Laxmi was worried about this. Lakshmi went to Bali, tied the Raksha sutra, and made him her brother. In response, she brought Vishnu with her.
Historical Significance
Maharani Karnavati of Mewar sent Humayun a Rakhi and asked for protection. Despite being a Muslim, Humayun honoured the Rakhi. Alexander's wife tied a Rakhi to Porus. She took a vow not to kill Alexander in the war. He honours his promise by wearing a Rakhi during the war.
Rakshabandhan Mantra
Regarding Indian culture, there is a distinct significance in tying a Rakhi or a Raksha sutra at auspicious times and performing a precise Puja Vidhi. 3 threads of protection are enfolded thrice and tied with this mantra.
येन बद्धो बलि राजा, दानवेन्द्रो महाबलः |
तेन त्वां मनुबध्नामि, रक्षंमाचल माचल
Chanting this mantra is auspicious. It says that, from the protection with which King Bali was bound, the same I tie around your wrist, and this thread will protect you against all evils and sins.
Date, Muhurta and Rituals of Rakshabandhan
It is said that if a thing is done at the right time, then the influence is relatively positive, and the same holds valid with tying Rakhi. So, it is advisable to tie a Rakhi at an auspicious time or in the Shubh Muhurta.
In 2024, the festival of Rakshabandhan will be celebrated on 19 August. The Shubh muhurta to tie a Rakhi is from 1:30 PM to 9:08 PM. Tie the Rakhi within this time and follow all the rituals.
Brothers and sisters should all be ready in nice clothes to celebrate the Rakhi festival. Try to wear bright clothes, and refrain from dark-coloured ones. Sisters should prepare a pooja thali, which should include Roli Red Vermillion, Akshat Raw rice, Deepak lamp, and some sweets. Tie the Rakhi on the right hand, continue chanting the mantra, perform the brother's aarti, and offer sweets.
Brothers should touch the feet of their elder sisters and seek blessings. Both should keep their heads covered during the entire ritual.
