The Poy Sang Long Festival happens every year between March 20 and mid-April in numerous sanctuaries in North Thailand. It is in reality more a function than a celebration. In Chiang Mai there are two sanctuaries where this function happens. The celebration is basically Shan or Tai Yai and signifies "appointing the dearest children". Young men from 7 to 14 years of age go to the sanctuary to be appointed as amateurs.
