About Debre Markos
Debre Markos is a city and woreda in northwest Ethiopia. Located inside the Misrak Gojjam Zone of the Amhara Administrative Region, it has a range and longitude of 10°20′N 37°43′E and an elevation of 2,446 meters. The city is called Debre Markos after its most important church, which changed into constructed in 1869 and dedicated to St. Markos.
Debre Markos turned into the capital of Tekle Haymanot, Nigus of Gojjam in the course of his reign and as a result, Pankhurst notes, the populace of Debre Markos fluctuated greatly with the presence of absence of the military of the Negus. He states that after the Nigus resided in the city, it had between 20,000 and 40,000 inhabitants; in his absence, among 5,000 and 6,000.
