Catacombs of Kom el-Shuqqafa

The Catacombs of Kom el-Shuaqqfa are slashed from the stone on the southern inclines of a slope, in the Carmous area. Thought to date from the second century AD, they offer a splendid case of the trademark Alexandrian combination of Egyptian and Greco-Roman styles.

Found in 1900 on account of a jackass falling into them they are laid out on a few levels of sarcophagi and loculi rack tomb chambers.

A winding staircase leads down into the ground to the fundamental rotunda.

To one side, you can enter the primary internment chamber and furthermore the Sepulchral Chapel with 91 loculi, every sufficiently expansive to suit three or four mummies.

To one side is a substantial room known as the Triclinium Funebre, which would have been utilized for meals out of appreciation for the dead.
