About Gavno
Gavno is a small Danish island off the west coast of Zealand in Nastved Municipality. Located some 6 km south-west of Nastved, it has an area of five.6 km2, and, as of 1 January 2010, it has a population of fifty seven. Gavno is now related especially with Gavno Castle, an excellent Rococo building with an appealing park. The first historic mention of Gavnø is in King Valdemar's census e book from 1231 where a "house on Gavno" is stated. The house was reputedly a fortress built to shield Denmark's western coasts. In the fifteenth century, Queen Margaret I opened St Agnes' Priory there, catering for nuns from aristocratic households.
The chapel can still be visible inside the fortress's southern wing even though it has given that been extended. In 1737, Count Otto Thott received Gavnø. He renovated and considerably extended the citadel, growing brand new 3-winged, yellow-façaded constructing in the Rococo style where he was able to residence his huge collections of paintings, manuscripts and books. At his death, his library series contained over one 10020,000 volumes, exceeding that of the Danish National Library. The park surrounding the castle is thought for its uncommon bushes, rose garden and, specially, its good sized display of bulbs.
