About Elmelunde Church
Elmelunde Church, well-known for its frescos, is located in the village of Elmelunde, Mon, in southeastern Denmark. It stands high above the environment simply south of the primary street from Stege to the white cliffs of Mon. The wonderful whitewashed constructing can be seen from miles round and has been used as a landmark with the aid of sailors within the Baltic Sea. Elmelunde is the oldest church at the island of Mon, seemingly constructed on a website wherein a wood church as soon as stood. The flat mound, to the north of the church, is even older. It is assumed to be a heathen burial ground from the bronze age.
The present church dates returned to 1085 while elements of the existing choir and nave had been constructed inside the Romanesque style. Only the triumphal arch and the sidewalls continue to be from this era. The earliest additions had been achieved around the 12 months 1200 when the church became prolonged closer to the west. Work on the tower started out around 1300 but changed into now not completed until 1500. The wood ceiling become changed through Gothic crossvaulting in 1462.
