About Kyrenia Gate
The Kyrenia Gate is a gate in the Nicosia walls, in North Nicosia, Northern Cyprus. It was the gate which was used for transport to the northern areas, especially Kyrenia. The entryway was worked in 1567 by Venetians, as a piece of the new city dividers. It was reestablished by the Ottomans in 1821, and a post was added to the entryway for a plausible Greek revolt. Presently, the entryway is utilized as a tourism data office by the Nicosia Turkish Municipality. Tablets from ious periods hold tight the entryway.
One of these is in Latin and dates from the Venetian time frame, highlighting the date "MDLXII", 1562 when the development of the door started. The content in Latin was rediscovered when an engraving of the Quran set by the Ottomans on it was evacuated in 1931 by the British. Around the same time, "1931" and "GVRI", which is a shortened form of "George V Rex et Imperator" "George V, King and Emperor", were engraved on the entryway to stamp the date of the remodel and the dominant British ruler. A third engraving was put by the Ottomans in 1821, who revamped the entryway at the time, and bears the tughra of Mahmud II.
