About Malecon
The Malecon is a broad esplanade, roadway and seawall which stretches for eight km along the coast in Havana, Cuba, from the mouth of Havana Harbor in Old Havana, alongside the north aspect of the Centro Habana neighborhood, ending inside the Vedado neighborhood. New groups are appearing on the esplanade due to economic reforms in Cuba that now allow Cubans to own private organizations. Construction of the Malecón began in 1901, for the duration of transient U.S. Navy rule. The principal reason of constructing the Malecón became to guard Havana from the ocean and the so-referred to as American Nortes.
To rejoice the construction of the primary 500m segment of the Malecon, the American authorities built a roundabout at the intersection of Paseo del Prado, which, in keeping with architects of the duration, turned into the first one constructed in Cuba with metallic-strengthened concrete. In front of the roundabout, wherein each Sunday bands played Cuban melodies, the Miramar Hotel was constructed, which changed into very a great deal in fashion for the primary 15 years of independence and which was the primary one in which the waiters wore tuxedos and vests with gold buttons.
