Vela Spila
About Vela Spila
The Vela Spila cave is situated above the city of Vela Luka at the island of Korcula, in Croatia on Pinski Rat hill at an elevation of approximately one hundred thirty m. The cave consists of an elliptically formed cavern that measures forty m in duration, 17 m in height, and is approximately 40 m huge. There are, similar to the Brillenhohle in Germany, openings inside the roof of the cave which were caused by collapse at an as but undetermined time. Nikola Ostoic turned into the primary man or woman to describe the fall down current literature. In 1856, he wrote "Compendio Storico Dell Isola Di Curzola".
A neighborhood historian, museum commissioner, and collector of antiquities, he visited the cave in 1835. The cave has been stated inside the Kor?ula Statute back within the fifteenth century. Scientific studies of the cave started out in the late Forties. Marinko Gjivoje took up work at the site in 1949. In 1951, Marinko Gjivoje, Boris Ilakovac and Vinko Foretic started check excavations and the outcomes were allowed the proposal to continue. Based on these findings, Grga Novak determined to similarly excavate so as to verify the caves hyperlinks with the island of Hvar. The explorations had been achieved in September 1951. He posted his initial outcomes inside the Annals of the Yugoslav Academy.
