Slana concentration camp
About Slana concentration camp
Slana attention camp changed into a awareness and extermination camp at the Croatian island Pag. The camp was mounted in June 1941 in Metajna. It became installed through Mijo Babic and managed by way of the Ustase, who had been installed as rulers of the puppet state of Croatia through Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. Slana changed into a guys's camp. Most prisoners were Jews, Serbs and Croatian communists.
The commander of the camp changed into Ivan Devcevic, who changed into also a commander of the 13th Ustasa battalion which became garrisoned within the camp. The camp changed into closed in August 1941 by the Italian navy, who feared that the brutality of the Ustaše would provoke unrest inside the place. Historians have expected the dying toll in Slana and the women's camp Metajna to be between 4,000 and 12,000. During the first weeks the inmates mainly died of physical abuse, exhaustion, hunger and thirst. When the transports became extra common and the camp lacked space, the Ustaše started to execute many prisoners. The Author Ante Zemljar wrote a ebook about what took place in Slana in 1941: Charon and Destinies.
