About Skradin
Skradin is a small city in the Sibenik-Knin County of Croatia, with a population approximately three,986. It is located close to the Krka river and at the entrance to the Krka National Park, 17 km from Sibenik and one hundred km from Split. The major appeal of the park, Slapovi Krke, is a sequence of waterfalls, the most important of which, Skradinski buk, was named after Skradin. The name "Scardona" likely comes from the Indo-European root kwer, meaning cliff. The same root is visible, as an instance, in Cersia.
It became an Illyrian settlement on the boundary between the Dalmatae and the Liburnian tribes. It become higher known as a Roman metropolis, as the administrative and military centre of the region. It became destroyed throughout the Migration Period, and had via the ninth century been settled by using Slavs. During the 10th century, it was one of the fortified towns in Croatia, because the centre of the Skradin zupanija.
