About Osijek
Osijek is the fourth biggest town in Croatia with a population of 108,048 in 2011. It is the most important metropolis and the financial and cultural centre of the japanese Croatian place of Slavonia, as well as the administrative centre of Osijek-Baranja County. Osijek is located at the right financial institution of the river Drava, 25 kilometres upstream of its confluence with the Danube, at an elevation of 94 metres. The name become given to the city due to its position on multiplied floor which prevented the town being flooded by means of the neighborhood swamp waters.
Its name Osijek comes from the Croatian phrase "oseka" which means that "ebb tide". Due to its records inside the Habsburg Monarchy and in brief inside the Ottoman Empire, in addition to the presence of German and Hungarian minorities at some stage in its history, Osijek has its names in other languages, drastically Hungarian: Eszek, German: Esseg or Essegg, Turkish: Ösek, Latin: Essek. It is also spelled Esgek.
