The Austrians built Karlovac from scratch in 1579 with a purpose to strengthen their southern defences against Ottoman encroachments. The established order of a brand new city-citadel changed into a part of the deal between the Protestant the Aristocracy of Inner Austria and the archduke Charles II of Austria. In exchange for their non secular freedom the nobility agreed to finance the building of a new castle in opposition to the Ottoman Empire.
