About Shamian Island
The island's name truly signifies "sandy surface" in Chinese. Encompassed by water, it is much the same as a goliath dispatch mooring close by the wharf. Get further and one will find that the island is painstakingly arranged.
Three east-west roads, Shamian Avenue, Shamian North Avenue and the South Avenue, and five north-south lanes, Shamian Street 1 to the Street 5 partition the entire territory into 12 sections, with different structures, in particular White Swan Hotel, Shamian Hotel, and Poland Consulate in Guangzhou, scattered around. Shamian Island has incredible memorable centrality. From the Song and the Qing Dynasty, it filled in as an imperative port for Guangzhou's outside exchange. The it turned into a key point for city protection amid the second Opium Wars 1856-1860.
