About Potala Palace: Lhasa
This is probably the most famous and recognizable landmark in Tibet. Constructed by King Songtsen Gumpa in the 7th century, it was used by him as a retreat for meditation and remained to be so till his death. The palace was heavily damaged during the many wars and natural disasters and remained neglected till the 5th Dalai Lama resurrected it, virtually reconstructed it in a new style. It since then became the Holy Residence of Dalai Lama. It remained the seat of Dalai Lama till the 14th Dalai Lama was exiled to India. The palace is clearly demarcated into White Palace and Red Palace. The White palace is the administrative block where as the red palace is the religious block. Deyang Shar courtyard is where you will be entering from. The courtyard used to be the venue for Tibetan Opera which was enjoyed by the Dalai Lama and other officials. The fifth and the sixth floor has been converted into living quarters for monks. You will see some of the most splendid Tibetan paintings adorning the walls of the palace. d a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Potala Palace can be visited on days from 9 AM to 12 Noon and 3 PM to 5 PM in the evening.
