About Hangu Pass

Hangu Pass or Hanguguan is a pass isolating the upper Yellow River and Wei valleys the support of Chinese human advancement and seat of its long-term capital Xi'an from the fruitful North China Plain. It lies on the south bank of the Yellow River only east of its eastbound curve out of the Ordos Loop at Tong Pass in Shaanxi. It was the site of numerous fights amid the Warring States and early royal periods, when it was the chokepoint protecting Qin, Guanzhong, or Luoyang from outside assault. Today, the term Hangu Pass alludes to two areas: right off the bat, to a gallery stop including a recreation of the door in Lingbao province, Sanmenxia city, Henan and also, to the archeological site of the entryway in Xin'an region, Luoyang city, Henan.

Chinese legends state Lao-tzu composed his Tao Te Ching for an outskirt protect at the Hangu Pass before leaving for the west. The province of Qin strengthened the go in 361 bc as its eastern border, protecting access to their country from the armed forces of the other Warring States contending to succeed the Zhou. It kept on securing the Guanzhong territory of the Qin and Western Han realms. Under the Eastern Han that succeeded Wang Mang's "Xin administration", its fortresses secured the capital Luoyang the other way, fighting off assaults originating from the west and northwest. After the fall of the Han and ascent of the Three Kingdoms, the Hangu Pass lost the vast majority of its significance as the essential strongholds moved somewhat west to Tong Pass.
