Top town

Topsham, on the Exe Estuary four miles from focal Exeter, is a pearl of a little town. Once a bigger port than Exeter itself, it has a pleased shipbuilding and oceanic history. The town's story is told in Topsham Museum, in the Strand, a riverside road with 300-year-old vendor houses in the Dutch style, with bent peak closes. There are additionally old-fashioned shops, lunch nooks, bars and some great eateries in the town.

Another beneficial journey is to fourteenth Century Powderham Castle, the setting for the 1993 film The Remains Of The Day, featuring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson. Honiton, 16 miles toward the north-east, is acclaimed for its ribbon making and is likewise justified regardless of a visit.
