About Saint Boniface Cathedral
Saint Boniface Cathedral is a Roman Catholic basilica and the cathedral of Saint Boniface, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It is a critical working in Winnipeg, and is the essential church in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Saint Boniface, serving the eastern piece of Manitoba territory and in addition the neighborhood Franco-Manitoban people group. The basilica sits in the focal point of the city at 190 road de la Cathedrale, Saint Boniface. The primary church on the site was established by Fr. Norbert Provencher, a minister and future religious administrator, who requested its development in 1818 as a little log sanctuary.
In 1832 Bishop Provencher assembled the main church however on December 14, 1860, a fire demolished the principal building. In 1862, Bishop Alexandre Antonin Tache revamped the house of prayer in stone. The Cathedral faces the Red River. Close-by is Esplanade Riel, Provencher Bridge, Provencher Park, Tache Promenade, Verendrye Park, the Universite de Saint-Boniface and the Saint-Boniface Museum. In Verendrye Park is a statue of Pierre La Verendrye by Joseph-Emile Brunet. Over the stream is The Forks in Downtown Winnipeg.
