About Morden Colliery Historic Provincial Park

Morden Colliery Historic Provincial Park is a 4 hectare provincial park in British Columbia, Canada. Morden Colliery Historic Provincial Park secures highlights of Vancouver Island's rich coal mining history. This little, undeveloped day-utilize park contains the main outstanding coal tipple on the island. This solid tipple was worked in the mid 1900s by the Pacific Coal Company, and was the first of its kind in the area. The tipple is all that remaining parts of the Morden Coal Mine, which once flourished here.

The primary turf was turned at this mine in 1912; in its first year of activity the mine delivered 76,000 tons of coal. The Regional District of Nanaimo keeps up a trail that goes through the park to the Nanaimo River along a historic railroad right-of-way. This park is found 7 km south of Nanaimo on southern Vancouver Island. Access to the park is off Hwy 1 on Morden Road. The parking part for Morden Colliery is likewise utilized as the trailhead for the territorial region.

The region around the coal tipple is fenced off for open security. Access inside the fenced territory is denied. There are no created trails inside Morden Colliery Historic Park; anyway the Regional District of Nanaimo keeps up a trail that goes through the park to the Nanaimo River. Interpretive signage at the parking parcel offers more data about the mine site.
