About Moncton
Moncton is the largest city in the Canadian province of New Brunswick. Arranged in the Petitcodiac River Valley, Moncton lies at the geographic focus of the Maritime Provinces. The city has earned the epithet "Center City" because of its focal inland area in the locale and its history as a railroad and land transportation center point for the Maritimes. The city appropriate has a populace of 71,889 2016 and has a land zone of 142 km2 55 sq mi. The Moncton CMA has a populace of 144,810 2016, making it the biggest city and CMA in New Brunswick, and the second-biggest city and CMA in the Maritime Provinces. In spite of the fact that the Moncton territory was first settled in 1733, Moncton is considered to have been formally established in 1766 with the landing of Pennsylvania Dutch migrants from Philadelphia. At first an agrarian settlement, Moncton was not joined until 1855. The city was named for Lt. Col. Robert Monckton, the British officer who had caught adjacent Fort Beausejour a century sooner. A noteworthy wooden shipbuilding industry had created in the network by the mid-1840s, taking into account the urban consolidation in 1855, however the shipbuilding economy fallen in the 1860s, making the town lose its municipal contract in 1862.
