About Lower Fort Garry
Lower Fort Garry was built in 1830 by the Hudson's Bay Company on the western bank of the Red River, 20 mi 32 km north of the original Fort Garry. Treaty 1 was signed there. A staggering surge annihilated Fort Garry in 1826, inciting the organization's then-senator, George Simpson, to look for a more secure area down stream.
Senator Simpson picked the site of Lower Fort Garry due to its high ground and area underneath the St. Andrew's Rapids, dispensing with a tedious portage of substantial hide packs and York water crafts. In any case, the post never turned into the authoritative focus it was expected, since a large portion of the number of inhabitants in the region was focused close to The Forks and questioned the additional movement required to work together at the new fortification. Therefore, Upper Fort Garry was remade in stone at The Forks, extremely close to the first Fort Garry site.
