About Esterhazy
Esterhazy is a town in the southeastern portion of the province of Saskatchewan, Canada, located 83 km southeast of Yorkton along Highways 22 and 80. The town is situated inside the rustic district of Fertile Belt No. 183. Esterhazy is rumored to be named for Count Paul Otto d'Esterhazy, a migrant specialist who was initiated Johannes Packh, however at age 35 guaranteed he had "indisputable proof" that he was a Hungarian blue-blood of the Esterházy family.
This case was never perceived by the Esterhazy family, one of the wealthiest families in Hungary. A year in the wake of making his case, he moved to Saskatchewan, south of the present area of the town of Esterhazy, and in 1886 helped settle 35 Hungarian families, establishing the state of Kapos, named after the Hungarian city Kapos. The province prospered, and numerous more outsiders settled the region as the years passed by.
In 1905 the town of Esterhazy was authoritatively established. The territory that is currently the township of Esterhazy was first settled by English pilgrims in 1882, who established Sumner Parish in the north. Later states incorporated the Swedes toward the west, Czechs toward the southwest, upper east a German province, northwest a Welsh one, and a Jewish settlement in the southeast, close Wapella, Saskatchewan.
