About Degelis

Degelis is a city in Temiscouata Regional County Municipality inside the Bas-Saint-Laurent area of Quebec. Its populace in the Canada 2011 Census was 3,051. The Madawaska River streams from Lake Temiscouata, through Degelis, to join the Saint John River at 32 kilometers East at Edmundston, New Brunswick. Situated on the banks of the Madawaska River, the city owes its name to a physical marvel: a zone of the stream situated in front the town, that never freezes.

A Degelis, in Old French, implies a zone on the water free of ice, a neighborhood winter thaw, meaning an opening in the ice amid the occasional defrosting. The region comparing to Degelis is named Degele in a report by Joseph Bouchette in 1815. The spelling at the time shifts significantly. Administrative and managerial records dating from 1858 to 1878 allude to the area under the name Degely, Ste. Rose Degely, or Degeli. Names "Sainte-Rose-du-Degel" and "Degelis" were likewise utilized for a period.
