About Bois Blanc Island

Bois Blanc Island, commonly called Boblo Island, is an island in the Detroit River on the Canadian side of the border and is part of Amherstburg, Ontario. The island is around 2.5 miles in length, 0.5 mile wide and 272 sections of land in size. The primary northbound delivery channel of the Detroit River at present lies between Bois Blanc Island and the Amherstburg territory. A stone beacon was worked in 1836 on the southern tip of Boblo island which denotes the authentic start of the Detroit River route channel for boats voyaging upriver from Lake Erie in more present day times.

It is currently part of the Bois Blanc Island Lighthouse and Blockhouse. Bois Blanc signifies "White Woods", a name got from the many birch and beech trees in the zone. "Boblo" is an English debasement of the French elocution of the name. A few islands with a similar name dab the Great Lakes, and almost all are known as "Boblo" or "Bounce lo" by the nearby populaces.
