Santa Luzia do Itanhy is a Brazilian municipality inside the kingdom of Sergipe, positioned on the southern coast of the country. Its population are called santa-luzienses. Santa Luzia do Itanhy is the oldest settlement in Sergipe and its basis coincides with the first attempts to colonize the Sergipe soil with the aid of the Portuguese. In 1575, the Jesuit priests Gaspar Lourenco and his brother Joao Solenio arrived inside the region, observed by means of a few settlers and a set of squaddies, who aimed to catechize the local populace.
In this location the Jesuit monks founded a church under the invocation of Sao Tome and in front of him a go with eighty palmos of height and still homes for housing. In 1698 the village turned into multiplied to the category of Vila by order of the Governor of Bahia D. Joao de Lencastro, with the call of Vila Real de Santa Luzia.
