Mata de Sao Joao is a municipality in the state of Bahia in the North-East locale of Brazil. Mata de Sao Joao was settled by the Portuguese in 1549 with the entry of Tome de Souza in Brazil. De Souza delegated his child Garcia de Sousa d'Avila to assemble a fortification on the Bahia drift. De Sousa d'Avila constructed the Garcia d'Avila Tower House and Chapel of Our Lady of the Conception complex, which comprised of a fortress, a palace, and a congregation. The manor is a one of a kind case of medieval design in the Americas.
The Casa da Torre set up various sugarcane manors in the Bahia locale and steers farms in Sergipe and the semi-bone-dry sertao of Sao Francisco. The Casa da Torre was likewise a focal point of subjugation of local Brazilians and the importation of African slaves. The relatives of Tome de Souza are additionally noted for their savagery and torment of slaves at Mata de Sao Joao; their demonstrations of barbarity are noted in the eighteenth century records of the Portuguese Inquisition.
