Igreja de Sao Roque
About Igreja de Sao Roque
The Igreja de Sao Roque Church of Saint Roch is a Roman Catholic church in Lisbon, Portugal. It was the most punctual Jesuit church in the Portuguese world, and one of the primary Jesuit holy places anyplace. The structure filled in as the Society's home church in Portugal for more than 200 years, previously the Jesuits were ousted from that nation. After the 1755 Lisbon tremor, the congregation and its auxiliary living arrangement were given to the Lisbon Holy House of Mercy to supplant their congregation and central command which had been obliterated. It remains a piece of the Holy House of Mercy today, one of its numerous legacy structures.
The Igreja de Sao Roque was one of only a handful couple of structures in Lisbon to endure the tremor generally solid. At the point when worked in the 16th century it was the principal Jesuit church structured in the "hall church" style explicitly to lecture. It contains various houses of prayer, most in the Baroque style of the mid 17th century. The most striking house of prayer is the eighteenth century Chapel of St. John the Baptist Capela de Sao Joao Baptista, an undertaking by Nicola Salvi and Luigi Vanvitelli built in Rome of numerous valuable stones and dismantled, transported, and recreated in Sao Roque; at the time it was supposedly the most costly house of prayer in Europe.
