About Saint Nicholas' Church
St. Nicholas' Church is one of the oldest and maximum outstanding landmarks in Ghent, Belgium. Begun within the early thirteenth century as a replacement for an in advance Romanesque church, construction endured via the relaxation of the century within the nearby Scheldt Gothic fashion. Typical of this fashion is the use of blue-grey stone from the Tournai area, the single massive tower above the crossing, and the slim turrets at the building's corners.
The building step by step deteriorated thru the centuries, to a point that threatened its balance. Cracks were overlaid with plaster, windows have been bricked up to enhance the walls, and inside the 18th century, little homes and stores were constructed up in opposition to the dilapidated facades. Interest inside the church as a ancient monument arose around 1840, and at the turn of the twentieth century predominant recuperation plans emerged. The houses along the church had been demolished and lots protection paintings has been done due to the fact then.
