About Montagne de Bueren
The Montagne de Bueren is a street with hundreds of steps in the center of the Belgian city ??of Liege . The street connects the Féronstrée et Hors-Chateau district with Au Péri and the entrance to the citadel of Liege. The staircase was constructed between 1875 and 1880 to commemorate the 600 Franchi monks who died in the Battle of Liege in 1468. The name refers to Vincent van Buren , one of the leaders of the battle. The staircase is therefore called the 600 escaliers . Legend has it that the Franchi monks would have climbed the mountain at that place, but this is historically incorrect. There are two monuments along the Montagne de Bueren
old parts of a fire station and a house with 18th-century elements. The street has a total length of 260 meters, the highest of which is 194 meters with steps. There are 374 steps and the average slope of the stair section is 28%. At the bottom, the stairs start at approximately 62 meters above sea level. At the top of the stairs, a height of 132 meters is reached; a 70-meter difference in height is bridged with the stairs. It is thus the second largest staircase in Belgium, after the staircase to the citadel of Dinant with 34 more steps.
