Fleron
About Fleron
Fleron is a municipality in the province of Liege , Belgium . The municipality has more than 16,000 inhabitants. Fort Fléron is also located in the town . Fléron consisted of two parts: The village was once part of the Carolingian Domain of Jupille, and finally came to the Principality of Liege . The church and some houses belonged to the guardianship of Fléron. This guardianship came to the Onze-Live-Vrouwekitittel in Aachen , which in 1629 sold it to the Prince diocese of Liege. Fléron was branded in 1406 by Prince Bishop Jan of Bavaria and in 1649 during the Chiroux war. The development of Fléron started relatively late, mainly because there was a lack of potable water. This provision did not improve until the course of the 18th century.
From the 15th century coal was mined on a small scale, and in the 19th century two industrial coal-mining companies were established that were active in Fléron. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the availability of coal created many forges, particularly nail forges. Between 1946 and 1958 large numbers of Italian guest workers settled in Fléron to work in the mines. Not long after 1958, however, the mines closed forever. Fléron has since become an urbanized place, intersected by the N3 and N621 main roads . There are business parks and chain stores. The former Spoorlijn 38 also passed through this area.
