About Curtius Museum
The Curtius Museum Musée Curtius is a museum of archaeology and decorative arts, located at the bank of the Meuse River in Liege, labeled as a Major Heritage of Wallonia. It changed into built sometime between 1597 and 1610 as a personal mansion for Jean Curtius, industrialist and munitions dealer to the Spanish military. With its alternating layers of pink brick and herbal stone, and its move-mullioned home windows, the constructing typifies the nearby fashion referred to as the Mosan or Meuse Renaissance. After a 50 million euro redevelopment, the museum reopened because the Grand Curtius Le Grand Curtius in March 2009,
now housing the merged collections of 4 former museums: the museum of archeology, the museum of weaponry, the museum of decorative arts, and the museum of spiritual artwork and Mosan artwork. Highlights within the collections include treasures of Mosan artwork which includes a 12th-century gilded reliquary tryptich, formerly within the church of Sainte-Croix, the Evangelarium of Notger, sculptures via Jean Del Cour, and a portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte painted by means of Ingres in 1804: Bonaparte, First Consul.
