Navahrudak Castle
About Navahrudak Castle
The former citadel in Navahrudak, Belarus become one of the key strongholds of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, noted by using Maciej Stryjkowski as the place of Mindaugas's coronation as King of Lithuania as well as his probable burial location. Modern historians can not make up their minds as to the genuine location of Mindaugas's coronation. As early as the 14th century, Navahrudak is known to have possessed a stone tower alongside the strains of Tower of Kamyanyets. Other fortifications were of timber.
The fortress was stormed by using the Teutonic Knights under Heinrich von Plötzke in 1314. Although the attack was now not successful, the tower sustained sizeable damage. During the reign of Vytautas the Great 4 new stone towers had been delivered to the system of Navahrudak fortifications. In the 17th century the principle citadel boasted 7 towers, other than the ones of the Lesser Castle. Navahrudak became one of the northernmost forts besieged via the Crimean Tatars inside the sixteenth century.
