Brest Fortress
About Brest Fortress
Brest Fortress formerly referred to as Brest-Litovsk Fortress, is a nineteenth-century Russian citadel in Brest, Belarus. In 1965, the title Hero Fortress was given to the Fortress to commemorate the defence of the frontier stronghold at some point of the first week of the German-Soviet War, while Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941, with the launch of World War II's Operation Barbarossa. The name Hero Fortress corresponds to the identify Hero City, that changed into offered to an eventual overall of twelve Soviet towns.
The production of the Imperial Russian fort started in 1833 primarily based on draft of the Russian navy engineer Karl Opperman in place of the vintage Ducal Lithuanian Brest Castle. After the autumn of the forts at Kovno and Novogeorgievsk, the Russians abandoned Brest castle, carrying away most of the munitions that have been stockpiled there. The Germans entered the fort on August 26, 1915. In 1918, the citadel become the area of the signing of the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, which made peace between Russia and the Central Powers.
