About Lohagara
Lohagara is an upazila of Narail District in the Division of Khulna, Bangladesh. Lohagara Thana was set up in 1861 and was changed over into an upazila in 1984. It is named after its regulatory focus, the town of Lohagara. Lohagara Upazila has an aggregate zone of 284.91 square kilometres. Situated between the Nabaganga and Madhumati waterways, it outskirts Magura District toward the north, Dhaka Division toward the east, Kalia Upazila toward the south, and Narail Sadar Upazila toward the west.
Lohagara Upazila is separated into Lohagara Municipality and 12 association parishads: Dighalia, Itna, Joypur, Kashipur, Kotakul, Lahuria, Lakshmipasha, Lohagara, Mallikpur, Naldi, Noagram, and Shalnagar. The association parishads are subdivided into 154 mauzas and 217 villages. Lohagara Municipality is subdivided into 9 wards and 24 mahallas. Kalibari Mandir is a Hindu sanctuary in Lakshmipasha devoted to the goddess Kali.
Writing in 1870, James Westland, previous Magistrate and Collector of Jessore, gave a record of its origins: A hundred years prior, and then some, there lived here a devout metal forger who utilized as often as possible to make pictures of Kali, and in the wake of venerating them to cast them into the waterway, as per the service of 'bissarjan.' But one night Kali appeared to him and revealed to him that she had decided for all time to take up her habitation him; so he gave her a house.
