About Sumqayit
Sumgayit is the third-biggest metropolis in Azerbaijan, placed near the Caspian Sea, approximately 31 kilometres faraway from the capital, Baku. The town has a population of round 298,000, making it the third-biggest city in Azerbaijan after the capital Baku and Ganja. The metropolis has a territory of 83 rectangular kilometres. It become founded on November 22, 1949. Two settlements are inside the metropolis management: Jorat and Haji Zeynalabdin, a settlement named after oil businessman and philanthropist Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev. It is home to Sumqayit State University.
According to the neighborhood folklore the town is known as after the Sumqayit River. In retrospect the legend tells the story of a hero via the name of "Sum", who is chosen by using the community to combat a monster that was blockading the Sumgayit River. Sum in the end manages to kill the monster, however when the river is launched he's swept via the waters and never seen once more. After that, his beloved, Jeyran, inconsolable by way of Sum's disappearance, might visit the river and cry "Sum qayıt!". So the river have become known as Sumgayit, upon the metropolis changed into named after.
